| Rappahannock Trauma and Acute Care Surgeons is a unique practice that provides care to all General Surgery patients, especially those who need emergency acute general surgery care. Additionally, the practice cares for injured (trauma) patients. Finally, the practice manages patients in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit in conjunction with their primary surgeons.
General Surgery is a surgical specialty dealing broadly with the entire alimentary tract (esophagus, stomach, intestines, colon, rectum and anus), the endocrine system (adrenal glands, spleen, thyroid and parathyroid glands), the biliary system (liver, pancreas, gallbladder), and a variety of skin ailments and hernias of all types.
The most commonly performed surgical procedures include cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder), appendectomy, hernia repair, and colon resection for infection, blockage or cancer. However, many other types of surgeries are performed as well. In the outpatient clinic, procedures such as proctoscopy, removal of skin lesions and lipomas, and draining of infections and abscesses are performed.. Endoscopy of both the stomach (called upper endoscopy) and colonoscopy are also procedures performed by General Surgeons.
